Genesis Digital Grey Card Kit
Genesis Digital Grey Card is a kit of pocket reference cards that help to set the correct exposure and white balance. Genesis Digital Grey Card is easy to use and a handy tool for setting a proper white balance on pictures. By the use of the three cards from the kit, you can easily get a precise white balance which can be used to shoot in JPG format, or later as a reference when RAW file editing in special software. The Genesis DGC is also useful to determine proper exposure in case of products or scenes which can affect light metering in camera.
Each card included in the kit is a covered with a special material with neutral spectral characteristics on both sides. The light reflected from the card surface has exactly the same color as the light falling on the photographed scene. Owing to this the proper white balance can be acquired.
Genesis Digital Grey Card serves as a light metering reference. The built-in camera's light metering is calibrated to middle gray, which corresponds to the surface that reflects exactly 18% of incoming light. In most cases, this method of light metering works fine, and is suitable for popular scenes. Unfortunately, in some extreme lighting conditions or scenes with complex lighting, the built-in light metering may set exposure parameters which are not adequate. For example: when taking a photo of white or black surface, it will be exposed to middle tone. The solution is to set the exposure parameters manually by metering the light reflected from the grey card.
Grey card
Both sides of the card are middle grey and have neutral spectral characteristics. It reflects exactly 18% of falling light. The card may be used as a reference for setting the exposure and white balance. With a combination of black and white cards, it can be used for checking the scene contrast.
White card
Both sides of the card are white and have neutral spectral characteristics. It reflects 90% of falling light. The card may be used as a reference for setting a white balance (automatic exposure must be turned on). With a combination of grey and black cards, it can be used for checking the scene contrast.
Black card
Both sides of the card are black and have neutral spectral characteristics. It reflects 3% of incoming light. With the combination of grey and white cards, it can be used for checking the scene contrast.
Maintenance
If a card gets dirty or scratched, it can be cleaned up with water and detergent. In the case of deep scratches they may be gently polished with a special paste for scratches on CDs. Do not use hard or corrosive substances, which can permanently destroy the card's surface.
